Dance training has changed considerably in the recent past. Gone are the days of body conformity, negative training and trauma inducing commentary, where instructors mistake fear and control for discipline. Dance Styles explained... Ballet: A highly technical form of dance. Classical ballet demands grace and precision based on a clear, rigid vocabulary of steps. Modern: Modern dance is a vastly expressive form of dance that includes the use of the arms and body to incorporate dramatic drop and roll movement and non-conforming leaps and gestures. Commercial: Commercial dance as a style, will differ depending on the purpose, but generally, commercial dance will include the most popular dance moves of an era and will appeal to the widest possible audience. Think dances to music videos and advertisements. Jazz: Jazz is an expressive form of dance regularly seen in Musical Theatre. Lyrical: Lyrical is a quality of dance. It is expressive and fluid placing an emphasis on understanding and interpreting the qualities of music through dance. Movements show off dancers' flexibility and strength, leaps can be high and explosive, turns smooth or frenetic, all are influenced by the music. Acro: Acro dance combines classical dance techniques with precision acrobatic elements. Acro encourages smooth and graceful transitions between dance and acrobatic movements. Stretch and Conditioning: This essential component of dance allows the participant to develop strength and body form allowing for greater depth.
